Bravo Iran! The camel's back is busted

This latest admission by Iran, of a second nuclear site, will be too much for the world to accept. By this I mean it is likely that no one in the Security Council will be willing to defend them against the extremely rough new sanctions Obama has been planning. That being said, this is the UN, so nothing is a done deal; but in all likelihood they are looking at a united Council.

This means big, big trouble for the Iranian regime. The new set of sanctions may include a partial naval blockade, an embargo on gas imports into Iran, and other actions which may well cause the popular uprising the regime recently violently put down to become an unstoppable tidal wave. Khomeini must suspect this, but I imagine Ahmadinejad has lost most of his sense of reality at this point...

How will the regime react? Open up to negotiations and real transparent inspections? I think this is unlikely, unfortunately. They have come too far down this road of obfuscation. The regime can ill afford to be seen in Iranian eyes "giving in to the Great Satan," after staking so much on the nuclear issue.

Do they continue to deny they are building a bomb, stonewall attempts at real dialogue and face the crushing sanctions and domestic consequences? Though this is their historical pattern, the regime must know this is a dangerous dangerous choice. Even if they can crush the internal dissent, the possibility of an Israeli air strike looms large.

Do they command Hezbollah to attack Israel or kidnap an IDF soldier as a distraction? This is not beyond the regime. They have done this kind of thing before, and clearly do not mind killing innocents to keep themselves in power. Usually, they can count on Israeli's taking the bait and becoming distracted, but in this case, Israel is prepared. They would simply use any attack as an excuse to not only bomb Iran's nuclear sites, but also attempt to take down Hezbollah again, this time with the world more on their side.

Luckily, the timing of this couldn't be any better. The UN just passed an unanimous resolution calling for nuclear disarmament, and a large part of the UN General Assembly walked out of Ahmadinejad's speech. In short, almost all of the world is against Iran now.

Obviously, I have no idea what the Iranian regime will do. They are on the defensive and their backs are up against the proverbial wall. The camel's back is broken, and the rider is far from an oasis. This is worrisome, because this is when any living thing is the most dangerous and unpredictable. No one knows what the future holds, but Iran has lost any popular support for their pet nuclear project, and this is certainly a good thing for most citizens of the world.

However, I dearly hope that the people of Iran will not be the one's made to suffer for the regime's arrogance and conniving...
